An education loan is a type of financial aid designed specifically to support students in pursuing higher education. These loans are typically provided by banks, NBFCs, or government-backed institutions. They cover various expenses such as tuition fees, accommodation, examination and library fees, travel (for overseas education), study materials, and even laptops in some cases.
There are two main types of education loans:
Domestic Education Loan – for studies within the home country.
Overseas Education Loan – for students planning to study abroad.
Education loans usually require a co-applicant (parent or guardian), and depending on the loan amount, collateral may be needed. Interest rates vary by lender and may be lower for female students or those applying under government schemes.
Most loans offer a moratorium period, meaning students start repaying the loan after completing their course plus an additional grace period (commonly 6 months to 1 year).
